Austrian Bundesliga History

Football has been played in Austria since the 1890s. At the end of the 19th century, an attempt was made to start a national championship in the country. The efforts finally succeeded in 1911, with the introduction of the first Austrian football championship named 1. Klasse (First Class). From 1924, the league was considered professional and was renamed as I. Liga (First League). Following the development, Austria again saw the introduction of the Nationalliga (National League) in 1937 that allowed several other Austrian states to join the highest division.

In the 1974-75 season, Austria saw the development of Bundesliga that aligned both of the highest divisions in the country. In 1976, the Nationalliga was renamed to Bundesliga – Second Division, whereas the Bundesliga was now referred to as Bundesliga – First Division. Between 1974 and 1982, the league involved ten football clubs, with each club playing the other four times during a given season.

The league’s format was changed in 1985 to a twelve-team league, with each team playing a home and away round in autumn. Here, the top eight clubs advanced to the Championship Round and again played each other twice. The bottom four clubs in the autumn round then played the top four of the First League in order to determine the four teams that would play in the Bundesliga in the following season.

The format was used until 1993 when the league again returned to its original ten-team format. And beginning the 2018-19 season, the league was expanded to its current 12-team format.

Austrian Bundesliga format

In a regular Austrian Bundesliga season, twelve Bundesliga teams play each other once at home and once away. At the end of the regular 22-game campaign, the league gets split into two. Then the top six teams play in the Championship Round and the last six take part in the Relegation Round.

In the Championship Round, the six teams retain some of their points from the regular season and play each other home and away again to determine the champions. The same format applies to the bottom six teams in the league.

Relegation Round and Europe

In the Austrian Bundesliga, the team that finishes at the bottom of the table after the conclusion of the 32-game season is relegated to the Austrian Second League. The next three teams up retain their Bundesliga status for the following year, and the top two clubs from the bottom six go into the Europa League’s playoffs.

  • The winner of the Championship Round is the champion of the Austrian Bundesliga and goes into the UEFA Champions League.
  • The runner-up of the Austrian Bundesliga enters the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League, and the third-placed team goes into the Europa League.
  • Teams 4 and 5 in the Championship Round move into the Europa League playoffs.
  • The sixth-placed team in the Championship Round achieves nothing.

Top teams in the Austrian Bundesliga

Red Bull Salzburg

Based in Wals-Siezenheim, Red Bull Salzburg is an Austrian professional football club that was originally founded as SV Austria Salzburg. Following a takeover by Red Bull, the club was later rebranded as Red Bull Salzburg in 2005.

Prior to the Red Bull rebranding, Salzburg had three Bundesliga titles to their name. But the takeover has done wonders for the club as it has managed to claim 10 Bundesliga crowns in the span of just 13 years.

Over the years, Red Bull Salzburg has built a reputation for itself by producing several popular footballers in Austrian Bundesliga history. Some of the many top players nurtured by the club include Erling Haaland, Naby Keita, and Sadio Mane amongst others.

Rapid Vienna

Originally named Sportklub Rapid Wein, Rapid Vienna is a popular Austrian football club playing in the capital city of Vienna. The club holds the record for winning the most Austrian championship titles (32), which also includes the first title in the 1911-12 season.

Rapid Vienna has also claimed the second spot in the league on 26 occasions. However, the rise of Salzburg has led to the club taking a backseat in the past few years. Rapid Vienna has been unable to register a victory in the Austrian Bundesliga since the 2007/08 season.

Austria Vienna

Austria Vienna is another Austrian association football club from the capital city of Vienna. With 24 Austrian Bundesliga titles and 27 cup titles to their name, Austria Vienna has been a highly successful team in Bundesliga history.

Just like their cross-city rival Sportklub Rapid Wien, Austria Vienna has experienced a dip in form in the past few years. Their most recent win came in the 2012/13 season of the league. Nevertheless, the Austria Vienna matches attract lots of football betting action and also receive some of the best football odds.
