WNBA history

The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is an American professional football league that began play in 1997. The league was created by the NBA Board of Governors as a women’s analogue to the NBA.

The first season of the WNBA began with eight teams: the Cleveland Rockers, Charlotte Sting, Houston Comets, and New York Liberty in the Eastern Conference, whereas the Phoenix Mercury, Los Angeles Sparks, Sacramento Monarchs and Utah Starzz in the Western Conference.

In 2002, the NBA started allowing the sale of franchises to ownership groups that did not have NBA teams and to groups in NBA cities that were unaffiliated with those NBA teams. Prior to that, the NBA owned each of the first eight franchises, which were located in a city that also had an NBA team.

The first four seasons of the WNBA saw the Houston Comets claiming the WNBA title four times consecutively. However, the franchise has failed to win the WNBA title since then. Nevertheless, the Comets along with the several other WNBA franchises have produced several outstanding players over the years.

WNBA format: A quick overview

Prior to the regular season, the WNBA teams hold training camps to prepare their players and select the 12-woman roster with which they’ll begin the regular season. After the conclusion of the training camp, a series of preseason exhibition games are conducted.

The regular season of the WNBA starts in May. During the regular season, each WNBA team plays 36 games – 18 home games and 18 away games. Following that, eight teams in the league qualify for the playoffs and are seeded one to eight.

The records made during the regular season are used to determine the seeding of the teams. The WNBA franchise with the best record receives seed one, the franchise with the next best record receives seed two, and so on. The teams with the top two seeds receive double byes, while the next two seeds get first-round byes.

The first two playoffs rounds follow a tournament format, with each team playing a rival in a single-elimination game. Here, the winner advances to the next round, while the losers get eliminated from the playoffs.

The semifinals and WNBA Finals are best-of-five series that follow a 2-2-1 home-court pattern. That way, the WNBA team with home-court advantage (a better record) conducts games 1, 2, and 5 while their opponent hosts games on 3 and 4. The 2-2-1 pattern in the WNBA Finals has been used since 2005.
