NBA History

Founded in New York City in 1946, the NBA, or National Basketball Association, is the most recognizable basketball league in the world. Initially known as the Basketball Association of America (BBA), it was a merger with its rival basketball association, the National Basketball League, which resulted in the change in name to the NBA.

Following the merger in 1949, Maurice Podoloff, head of the BAA since its advent, was elected as the head of the new league. The newly-formed league consisted of 17 teams that represented both small towns and large cities in the country. However, the early 1950s saw several NBA teams dwindling, which resulted in only eight teams remaining in the NBA during the 1954-55 season.

That year, the NBA created the 24-hour clock in an attempt to improve attendance and increase the national appeal of the league. The introduction of the 24-hour clock turned out to be a success, making play faster-paced and more engaging to watch. And with the introduction of several other innovations, the league continued to expand through the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

Today, the NBA has become a highly popular basketball league that attracts millions of players and sports bettors from across the globe.

NBA format: A quick overview

With the regular season running from October to April, the NBA season is one of the most gruelling in professional sports. After the conclusion of the regular season, the post-season playoffs and NBA finals take place from April to June.

Every team in the NBA plays a minimum of 82 games in a season, and this number can increase to a whopping 110 games when the post-season encounters are included. As with the formats of the MLB, NFL and NHL, the NBA is divided into Eastern and Western conferences. Here, the regional divisions make up each of these conferences.

With the conclusion of the regular NBA season, the best eight teams in each conference are determined. These eight teams then progress to the playoffs. This format of the NBA makes for many riveting clashes throughout the season, and it offers higher levels of betting opportunities as well.

How to bet on the NBA?

Betting on NBA works the same way as wagering on any other sport at Britain Bet. Once done with signing up for a Britain Bet account and adding funds into it, you need to navigate to the sports betting section of our site and select the NBA game you wish to bet on.

Let’s say you want to wager on an upcoming game between Miami Heat and LA Lakers. After selecting the game from our available basketball betting options, you need to choose the type of bet you wish to make. At Britain Bet, we have dozens of NBA betting markets available for every single game, ranging from simple ‘Game Winners’ bets to Points Handicap wagers.

After this, all you need to do is confirm your wager and wait for the outcome of the game. If your bet turns out to be right, you’ll get paid as per the odds for your selected bet type.

A look at the popular NBA betting markets

At Britain Bet, we bring to you the best NBA betting odds on a variety of NBA betting markets. Some of the most popular betting markets available on our platform include:

Moneyline betting

This is the simplest and also the most common type of bet available in the NBA. When you bet the money line, you’re simply wagering on who will win the game straight-up. Here, the margin of victory doesn’t matter.

Reading the odds for this bet type is also pretty straightforward. The odds here demonstrate how much you would win if you wagered £100, plus the return of the amount you wager. For example, if you back the Golden State Warriors to win at odds of £200, you’d win £200, plus your stake amount back. On the other hand, odds of -150 on the Lakers winning indicate that you’d need to wager £150 to win £100.

In Moneyline betting, a minus sign labels a team the favourite, whereas a plus sign labels the team that is deemed as the underdog in the game.

NBA points spread

This is another common bet type you can make in the NBA. But unlike the Moneyline wager that lets you select the outright winner, a spread bet allows you to wager on what number of points a team will win by.

Here, if you wager on the favourite, they need to win by a specified number of points. Conversely, if you bet on the underdog, they have to not lose by the specified number of points.

Here’s an example to make this more concrete. Let’s say you stake on a -9.5 point spread bet for the Lakers in a Miami Heat vs LA Lakers game. This means that you’d be wagering on the Lakers to win by at least 10 points in the game. Wagering on Miami Heat on a spread bet of +9.5 means you’d need Miami to lose by no more than 9 points to win the wager.

Over/under bets

As the name implies, this bet asks you to wager on whether the total number of points will fall below or above the specified number. Here, the total number of points can pertain to the total points scored by one team, the total points in a game overall, or even the total number of points scored by a single player.

As with several other sports bet types, there are many different NBA Over/Under bets. For example, in a game between the Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics, you could wager on whether the total number of points scored by both teams will fall below or above a specified number. Or, you could bet on the number of points scored by just one of the two teams falling above or below the specified number. Finally, you could wager on the number of points by a specific player falling above or below the specified number.

Futures

Along with betting on individual NBA matches, Britain Bet offers you the chance to wager on NBA futures bets. In a nutshell, these bet types allow you to wager on outcomes that will occur weeks or even months ahead of the time the wager is placed.

NBA futures bets are typically concerned with the results of individual divisional standings, eastern and western conference winners, and individual player outcomes. Britain Bet has all these futures bet types available, so you can easily enjoy NBA futures betting with us.
