EuroLeague history

The EuroLeague basketball competition was created in the summer of 2000 when FIBA (International Basketball Federation) dissolved the FIBA European Champions Cup. While FIBA had used the name EuroLeague for their basketball competition since 1996, it wasn’t until the early-2000s that the name was officially adopted.

At the start of the competition, the top FIBA basketball clubs were split into two leagues. Teams like CSKA Moscow, Panathinaikos and Efes Pilsen chose to stay with FIBA, whereas clubs like Real Madrid Teka, Žalgiris Kaunas and Tau Cerámica went on to join the EuroLeague.

In 2001, Europe saw two continental basketball champions – Kinder Bologna had won the EuroLeague and Maccabi won the FIBA SuproLeague. This emergence of two winners led to both the basketball organizations realizing the need for having a unified basketball competition. As a result, the teams that had stayed with FIBA went on to join the EuroLeague during the 2001-02 season.

In 2015, EuroLeague Basketball signed a 10-year agreement with the IMG to manage the commercial operations and global rights of the league. And in July 2019, EuroLeague basketball announced that it will be restricting direct access to the competition through domestic leagues from the 2019-20 season.

EuroLeague format

As with many other basketball leagues, the EuroLeague tournament follows a straightforward round-robin/playoffs format. The regular season of EuroLeague sees a total of 18 teams playing each other twice, home and away. Based on the number of wins after the conclusion of 34 games, the top eight teams make their way into the EuroLeague playoffs.

During the playoffs, the best eight teams are put together in a best of four-game series. Below we’ve detailed the series pairings in the EuroLeague playoffs:

  • Playoff A: 1st spot in Regular Season v 8th spot in Regular Season
  • Playoff B: 2nd spot in Regular Season v 7th spot in Regular Season
  • Playoff C: 3rd spot in Regular Season v 6th spot in Regular Season
  • Playoff D: 4th spot in Regular Season v 5th spot in Regular Season

The four winners of each of these playoff matches make their way to the EuroLeague Final Four. During the EuroLeague Final Four, the Playoff A winner plays against the Playoff D winner, whereas the Playoff B winner needs to play against the Playoff C winner. The two winners of the playoffs then play in the Final Four Championship game, where the winner gets crowned the EuroLeague Champion.
