About the Solheim Cup

Named after the American golf club designer and manufacturer Karsten Solheim, the Solheim Cup is a biennial golf tournament that is played between two teams of professional women golfers – Team Europe and Team USA. Being a dedicated golf competition for women golfers, the tournament features the 12 best American women golfers from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPA) tour and the 12 best European women golfers from the Ladies European Tour (LET).

The inaugural edition of the Solheim Cup was held in 1990, and the tournament was held in even-numbered years until the 2002 season. However, the postponement of the 2001 Ryder’s Cup (its men’s counterpart) resulted in the tournament being shifted to odd-numbered years from 2003. Another rearrangement of team-based golf competitions happened in 2020 due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis. As a result, the Solheim Cup will once again shift to its original even-numbered years’ format from 2024.

Speaking of the winning stats, Team America has been the most successful team in this professional women’s golf competition, with 10 Solheim Cups to their name. On the other hand, Team Europe has clinched the Solheim Cup title 7 times, with their latest victory coming in 2021 at the Inverness Club in Ohio.

Solheim Cup format

The golf event is played for three days, and it follows a format that is similar to that of the Ryder Cup. During a Solheim Cup tournament, eight foursomes and eight four-balls are played on days 1 and 2, and 12 singles are played on the final day. This accounts for a total of 28 games in a Solheim Cup season.

During a Solheim Cup match, one point is awarded to the team that wins the game. In case the match ends in a tie, both sides receive half a point. At the end of the competition, the team with the most points wins or retains the cup. Note that if there is a tie after the conclusion of all the matches, it is broken in the favor of the defending champion side.

Given the exciting nature of the tournament and its format, it’s a popular choice when it comes to golf betting online.

Team qualification and selection in the Solheim Cup

Unlike other team golf events, the European and United States teams in the Solheim Cup use different methods for their players’ selection.

The American Solheim Cup team employs a point system during its selection process. The top seven players from the LPGA Solheim Cup points ranking are selected, and the leading two players in the Women’s World Golf Rankings who haven’t already qualified via the point rankings make their way into the team. Here, the captain gets the chance to select three players for the team.

When it comes to Europe, their team consists of two players from the LET Solheim Cup standings and the leading four LET players on the Women’s World Golf Rankings. The captain of the European team selects six players for her side.

A look at the popular Solheim Cup betting markets

As with all other sports betting markets, there are several ways you can bet on the Solheim Cup golf competition. Here’s a look at the most popular ways to bet on this golf event:

Tournament winner

This is one of the most popular markets when it comes to betting on golf online. Here, you simply wager on who you think will win the game.

Versus the field bets

These wagers usually come into effect when there is a clear favourite to win in the tournament. Here, you’ll be wagering that any other player than the favourite golfer will win.

Prop bets

Prop bets are a great way to make your golf betting more exciting. Golf props are a selection of random wagers that usually don’t have a direct effect on the outcome of the competition. Some examples of prop bets are: will there be a playoff or not, will the winner of the competition be over or under a certain age group, and so on.

Futures

As the name implies, futures bets are long-term bets in golf betting. These bets are usually made at the start of the Solheim Cup competition or before the beginning of the finals.
