Belarusian Premier League history

Administered by the Belarusian Football Federation, the Belarusian Premier League is the top tier of the Belarus football league system. The first season of the Belarusian Premier League was held in 1992 and it saw the participation of one team from the former Soviet Top League and five sides from the lower divisions of the Soviet football league system. Also, the inaugural edition of the football league included ten sides who were previous participants in the Belarusian SSR First League.

During the creation of the league, the Belarusian Football Federation decided to alter the schedule from the European-style winter season to the Soviet-style summer season. For that, the format of the Belarusian Premier League was reduced to a single-round tournament between 16 football teams. The following season saw the addition of one more team, but the number was again reduced to 16 teams during the 1993-94 season.

Having won the league five times between 1992 and 1995, Dinamo Minsk was the dominant side in the Belarusian Premier League during its early years. During the next ten seasons, seven different clubs went on to lift the Belarusian Premier League trophy. Since the late 2000s, BATE Borisov has been the most successful team in the Belarusian Premier League, with 13 champion titles to their name during that period. Besides, BATE Borisov is always among the top clubs in football betting markets, all thanks to its successful track record and the involvement of several popular footballers in the team.

Belarusian Premier League format

As mentioned earlier, the number of teams participating in the Belarusian Premier League tends to vary in each season. Currently, there are 16 teams that take part in this Belarusian football league. During the regular Belarusian Premier League season, each football club plays every other team twice.

At the end of the season, the top two teams in the league are promoted to the Premier League, whereas the bottom two teams get relegated to the Belarusian First League. The bottom third team in the Belarusian Premier League plays a promotion-relegation playoff against the third-best team from the Belarusian second division.
