Swedish Allsvenskan history
The Allsvenskan is the top division of football in Sweden that was founded in 1924. Swedish Allsvenskan is the successor of the Svenska Serien, which was the highest league in Swedish football during the early 20th century.
In the initial seasons of Swedish Allsvenskan, Gotland and Norrland teams weren’t allowed to play on higher levels in the league system. Following the development of the league, this rule was changed and the Norrland and Gotland teams were allowed to play on higher levels.
For the 1959 season of Swedish Allsvenskan, the season start was shifted from autumn to spring. In 1973, the league was expanded to accommodate 14 teams. The 1982 season of the league saw the introduction of a play-off to determine the Swedish football champions. In 1990, the three points per win rule was introduced in Swedish Allsvenskan.
Since 2008, the league follows its current structure and consists of 16 teams. Since the past few years, Swedish Allsvenskan has started attracting lots of football betting action, all thanks to the league’s increasing popularity in different parts of the world.
Swedish Allsvenskan format
Since the 2008 season, the Swedish Allsvenskan features 16 clubs. During the course of an Allsvenskan season, which starts in late March and ends in early November, each Swedish Allsvenskan club plays the other twice – home and away – for a total of 30 games. Here, the teams that take the bottom two spots at the end of the season are relegated to the Superettan and the top two clubs from the Superettan take their place. Furthermore, the team that has finished at the third-last position plays a relegation/promotion play-off against the third-placed team in Superettan.
The champions of the Swedish Allsvenskan get qualified for the UEFA Champions League. The runner-up along with the third-placed team in Allsvenskan qualify for the UEFA Europa League as well as the team who wins the Svenska Cup. If it happens that the winner of the cup has already qualified to Champions League or Europa League, then the third Europa spot is given to the club that finishes fourth in Swedish Allsvenskan.

Top teams in Swedish Allsvenskan
Being the highest football league in Sweden, Swedish Allsvenskan is filled with several popular footballers and historic clubs. Below are some of the biggest and most popular teams in Swedish Allsvenskan:
Malmö FF
Having won their first Swedish Allsvenskan title in 1944, Malmö FF is one of the oldest and the best clubs in the Swedish Allsvenskan. To date, Malmö FF has won 20 Swedish Allsvenskan titles and the club also has 15 runner-up finishes to their name.
Based at Eleda Stadion in Malmö, Scania, Malmö FF is the only club from the Nordic countries that has reached the final of the European Cup, the predecessor of the Champions League. Also, the club qualified for two consecutive group stages in 2014 and 2015, and it also played in the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League in 2019 and 2020.
AIK
No football club has spent more time in Sweden’s top division than AIK. However, the club has experienced a lot of disappointing campaigns in the past few years.
AIK, the club that has 12 Swedish Allsvenskan titles to its name, has recorded five consecutive top-three finishes between 2013 and 2017. But the club has continuously failed to clinch the Allsvenskan title in all these years.
While the club has experienced a series of disappointments in recent times, its matches attract lots of football betting action. This is because AIK has some of the best footballers in the division, which include ex-EPL star Sebastian Larsson and Ghanaian international Ebenezer Ofori.
Djurgården
Djurgården is another major football club in Sweden’s top tier. Founded in 1891 on the island Djurgården, the club’s home ground is Tele2 Arena, located in the Johanneshov district of Stockholm.
Playing in the highest Swedish division, Djurgården has won the league twelve times. Also, the club has five cup titles to its name. Djurgården’s most successful era was in the early 2000s, where they won both the league and the cup three times.
