About Bulgaria League

The Bulgaria League, widely known as First Professional Football League, is an association football tournament that is located at the top of the Bulgarian football league system. The league was first formed in 1924 on the basis of a straight knockout format, but it later changed to league format in 1948.

Based on the league’s European coefficient, the champions of this football tournament get to take part in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League. In addition, two UEFA Europa League positions are given to the winner of the European playoffs and the second club in the final points ranking.

Given the system of promotion and relegation of this football league with top football tournaments, it is one of the most exciting football events to bet on.

Bulgaria League format

The Bulgarian First League works on a relegation and promotion system with the Second Professional Football League. The competition is contested by 14 Bulgarian football teams in two phases – the regular season and the playoffs.

The regular season of the Bulgarian League sees each team competing against every other team twice on a home-away basis, for a total of 26 games per club. After the conclusion of the first phase, the top six teams in the league form a European qualifying table, whereas the bottom eight teams enter a relegation group.

Each team in the top six then plays three games against every other team in that group. The winner of this group is awarded the Bulgarian First League title and secures a position in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round. The second-placed team in this group secures a position in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds, whereas the third-placed team take part in a playoff game against a representative team from the last eight.
