About the Belgium Football League

The Belgium Football League, commonly referred to as the Belgian First Division A, is the top division of the Belgium football league system. The competition was created by the Royal Belgian Football Association in 1895 and it works on a relegation and promotion system with the Belgian First Division B.

The Belgian First Division A has seen 74 football clubs competing for the champions title since its creation, but only 16 of them have managed to actually claim it. RSC Anderlecht is the most successful club in the league, with 34 titles to their name. The Anderlecht-based club is followed by Club Brugge and Union Saint-Gilloise, the clubs having 17 and 11 Belgium Football League titles respectively.

Based on the performances in European football tournaments in the past few years, the Belgian First Division A currently holds the 8th position in the UEFA ranking of leagues. The tournament was given the 3rd rank when UEFA first published their rankings in 1979. Their 3rd rank in the late 1970s is also the best ranking that the football league has ever received.

Belgium Football League format

As mentioned earlier, the Belgium Football League works on a relegation and promotion system with the Belgian First Division B. During the regular season, which is conducted between August and April, each of the 18 teams in the league hosts every other team once for a total of 34 matches.

As with some other football tournaments, a win in the Belgium Football League earns 3 points, whereas a draw is given 1 point. If it happens that two teams have the same number of points, they are ranked by total wins, and then by goal difference, number of scored goals, and number of away points.

After the conclusion of the regular season, the playoff phase of the Belgium Football League is conducted in May. Here, the top four teams from the regular season play their opponent twice, and the club with the highest number of points wins the Belgium championship.
