Big Bash League history
After seeing the huge success of the IPL (Indian Premier League), a number of countries have gone on to launch their own T20 leagues. Australia is one of the first countries that decided to launch its own leagues during the early 2010s.
The inaugural edition of Australia’s new T20 tournament – Big Bash League (BBL) – proved to be a huge success for cricket in the country. Also, a number of famous Aussie cricketers took part in the first season of the BBL, paving its way to becoming a highly popular T20 tournament among cricket fans in Australia and around the world.
Since the very first season of the BBL, the league has received a lot of publicity and coverage from local as well as international media. Also, the BBL has given a platform for young Aussies to make a name for themselves in the world of cricket.
Given the huge success of the league over the years, Cricket Australia now plans to bring about a number of changes in the BBL. They include adding new teams from lesser-known parts of Australia like Newcastle, Canberra, and Geelong. If things go as planned, the BBL will be able to cater to a much wider audience and will only become more popular in the coming years.
Big Bash League format
Since its inaugural edition in 2011, the BBL has followed the same format every year except its first season. The first season of the league featured 28 group matches, but the number was increased to 32 in the following season.
Following the change in the second BBL edition, the group stage matches were divided into eight rounds, and four matches were played in each round. Here, each BBL franchise played six other teams once during a season, and one team twice.
But since the 2018-19 edition of the league, each team plays all other teams twice during a season. That way, a total of 56 regular matches are played before the final series of the competition. The final match of the league is played at the home ground of the highest-ranked team.

New Big Bash rule changes explained
At the end of 2020, Cricket Australia announced three new changes to the playing conditions of the Big Bash League. These changes were made with an aim to enhance performance and increase engagement throughout the competition. The additional new BBL rules are:
Power Surge –
This rule applies to the batting side and can be requested any time after the conclusion of the 11th over. Here, the batting team can opt for an additional two overs of powerplay after the initial block of six powerplay overs.
The X-factor –
With this rule, players 12 and 13 on the team sheet can come in after the 10th over of the first inning. These players can replace any player that has not batted or bowled a maximum of one over.
Bash Boost –
This is a bonus point that is awarded halfway through the second innings. Here, the team chasing will be awarded the bonus point if they’re above the equivalent 10-over score of the opposite side. On the other hand, the fielding side will receive a point if the batting team is trailing.
