However, what lay ahead, was an astonishing sporting comeback when Ali came back to win the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ title in 1974 by beating George Foreman. In 1978, he also won the world heavyweight title for the third time by beating Leon Spinks.

If you aren’t aware of Alex Zanardi’s sporting comeback, you are not aware of one of the most remarkable comebacks in all of sporting history. The former Formula One racer met with a horrific crash during the 2001 American Memorial CART race in Germany.

The crash had left both his legs amputated and some suspected that it could be the end of his sporting career. However, Zanardi had different plans in mind and returned to action less than 2 years after the accident.

And to top it all, Zanardi competed in the European Touring Car Championship and in the World Touring Car Championship where he won four times between 2005-09. However, that was not all.

Four gold medals and two silver medals in hand cycling at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games are also things that followed. But a road accident, while competing in a race in Italy, saw the legend undergo five brain surgeries and was finally released from hospital 18 months later.

His Ferrari had hit the earth bank, later bounced back onto the track and immediately burst into flames. He was taken to the hospital and for the next few days, he was left to fight for his life.

But 43 days later, the world got to see Lauda compete at the Italian Grand Prix, finishing the race in fourth position. The following year he was crowned as the champion and in 1984, he made it three alongside McLaren.
